501 Consultants was founded based on the needs of board members our CEO enountered through decades of working with and for organizations.
Our team at 501 includes a broad range of experience and expertise to meet those needs.
Vicky Scharlau President/CEO:
Vicky has 30 years experience developing and managing organizations, projects and programs across the US and Mexico. Her skills include non-profit association and project management, non-profit board training, facilitation, strategic planning, organization and project budgeting, grant writing and managing, marketing and communications. Her range and depth of professional experience have earned Vicky a reputation as a leader, strategist, advisor, and communications specialist. She has a demonstrated ability to implement sound and effective management practices and deliver programs with a refined level of methodology and professionalism. Vicky’s work experience includes stints with the Washington Apple Commission, Washington State Horticultural Association, Washington State Department of Agriculture, Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Gerald Dryer and Associates (Madison, Wisconsin), Image Management (Milwaukee, Wisconsin) and Wisconsin State Representatives Jim Harsdorf and Dave Paulson. She has a bachelor’s degree in agriculture from the University of Wisconsin in agricultural journalism and agricultural economics and masters of public administration from the University of Washington’s Evan’s School of Public Affairs.
Sara Cornell Director of Constituent Services:
Sara’s interest in the non-profit sector began with her position as Executive Director for the Performing Arts Center of Wenatchee. During seven-plus years she worked to grow a struggling, fledgling organization into a thriving community asset building infrastructure, managing multiple projects, handling media and public relations, along with community outreach, interpersonal relations, fundraising and development. Sara also has experience in the broadcasting industry, writing, consulting and stage management. She has served on the Washington State Arts Alliance/Foundation Board and the Washington State Arts Commission Grants Committee. Sara graduated Magna Cum Laude in Liberal Studies from Seattle University.
Julie Lindholm Special Projects Director:
Julie is originally from the Walla Walla area where her family still owns wheat land. She has years of experience in the wine industry most recently dedicating four years as the General Manager for a North central winery. Plus, she is accomplished in website and graphic design, and has even worked in the international tourism field. Julie’s husband has worked for the YMCA for over 17 years so she has a deep understanding of non-profits and community relations. She attended Delta Business College in Salem and previously held an insurance license.
Janet Heath Program Manager:
Janet brings her educational background and life experiences in horticulture and agricultural economics to 501 Consultants. Her work experience includes banking, sales, and education program development for adult learners at a community college. She has a Bachelor of Science degree in horticulture from WSU and also a master of arts in agricultural economics.
Debbie Sands Business Manager:
Debbie has over 25 years of experience in all aspects of accounts payable, accounts receivable, monthly financials, payroll, taxes and yearly auditing. She has also run her own bookkeeping service. She is fluent in QuickBooks, QuickBooks Pro, Delp Farm Accounting and AS400. Debbie has provided payroll and bookkeeping services for the 400-person staff of Blue Star Growers in addition to technology needs as administrator. Debbie has also worked with Timberland Custom Homes, Cashmere Fruit Exchange, Schmitten Orchards and Pine Shadow Orchards. She attended Wenatchee Valley College and also WSU for accounting.
Kristin Jander Office Assistant:
Kristin is the newest member of the 501 Consultants team. She grew up in the Tri-Cities area and brings with her a wealth of knowledge concerning the wine industry and surrounding areas. Kristin is fluent in Spanish and attended college at Washington State University, where she studied Business Administration. She has experience working in finance, document control, and administration. In addition, Kristin is a certified Paralegal and is proficient in several different computer programs.
